Little did he realise that one day his own name would add to the ‘romantic allure’ of the desert.

His night near Benghazi was not a very restful one, as the RAF bombed the town. ‘I burrowed into the ground and tried to make my head disappear between my shoulders at the hateful, ghastly whoosh of incoming bombs …’5

The next day Almásy learnt that one of his men, Hans Entholt, had been injured in an air attack whilst travelling in another vehicle. He referred to him as his ‘officer candidate’, and had known him before the war. The two men had met in 1938, when Entholt was working as an actor. They had drifted apart in 1939 when Hans was called up for the army. Some suspected that the two men were romantically involved; the late John Bierman certainly thought so: ‘This man was, in fact, Almásy’s pre-war lover, Hans Entholt. Almásy had managed to get him switched to North Africa from a posting to the Russian front, the pair obviously having become reconciled …’6

It does seem odd that Almásy should request Entholt to join his command as a medical orderly.
